How to keep timber, leather and fabric looking like they did on day one.

Most furniture that looks tired is not worn out — it has been cleaned with the wrong thing. Five minutes of the right care a month will outlast any amount of restoration later.
Solid timber
- Weekly
- Dry microfibre cloth, along the grain.
- Spills
- Blot immediately. Water rings on oiled timber will lift with a re-oil; on lacquer they may not.
- Annually
- Re-oil with the kit supplied. One thin coat, wipe off the excess after 20 minutes.
- Never
- Silicone polish, all-purpose spray cleaner, or anything that foams.
Full-grain leather
- Weekly
- Dust with a dry cloth. Vacuum the crevices with a brush head.
- Twice a year
- Neutral leather cream, worked in with a cloth, buffed off.
- Sunlight
- Keep out of direct sun — it fades unevenly and dries the hide.
- Never
- Saddle soap, baby wipes, or anything containing alcohol.
Fabric and velvet
- Weekly
- Vacuum with an upholstery head. Rotate and plump cushions.
- Spills
- Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain into the pile and crushes it.
- Velvet pile
- Brush the pile back in one direction with a soft brush after cleaning.
- Never
- Steam cleaners on velvet, or household stain remover without testing underneath first.
